[Klondike Gold Rush]. Photograph of a Balloon Launch in Dawson City, Yukon Territory. 6.75" x 4.5". A crowd of hundreds is gathered along Front Street around an inflating hot air balloon, circa late 1890s. Front Street ran along the town's riverfront and people are spilling onto one of the piers. Located at left is the Monte Carlo Theatre. John Leonard made history in 1899 when he became the first person to fly a balloon over the city of Dawson.

Dawson City was the epicenter of the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899), as well as the territorial capital of the Yukon, which at its height boasted a population of over 40,000. By 1899, however, the population had dwindled to 8,000 and remained steady until the removal of the capital to Whitehorse in the early 1940s. Mounted to a backing board to an overall size of 8.75" x 5.75".
