[California Mining]. Lot of Three Booklets from California including: H. W. Ford, compiler. A Collation of Words Common to the French and English Languages. Jackson [California]: Amador Dispatch print, 1883. 12mo, 40 pages. Printed wraps. Used to "present the most important words common to the French and English languages," it contains approximately 2,500 words with short definitions. It is estimated that 25 to 30 thousand French arrived in California during the gold rush of the mid-nineteenth century and settled the surrounding areas, exerting their influence throughout the state, especially in northern California. Unevenly toned with repair to the spine. [and:] C. A. Luckhardt. Report on the Jupiter Deep Blue Gravel Hydraulic Mining Co. No. 1. April, 1886. 8vo, 7 pages. Printed wraps. Contains a full report on the mine, including a description and improvements as well as the gross yield and yield per cubic yard for nine separate claims. Luckhardt, a mining engineer and metallurgist, visited the operation at the request of company president, Dr. James D. Whitney. Late in 1884 California outlawed hydraulic mining because of the devastating effect on the environment. The Jupiter Deep Blue Gravel Hydraulic Mining Company was one of the last companies to use the procedure. Very few examples of this report are known to exist. With the exception of some trivial soiling to the covers and a gnawed top right corner, the pamphlet is in very good condition. [and:] John A. Stone. Put's Golden Songster - Containing the Largest and Most Popular Collection of California Songs Ever Published . San Francisco: D. E. Appleton & Co., 1886. 4" x 6". This early California Gold Rush publication was written for the 49er to "Relieve the tedium of a lonely cabin life." The author continues "I have endeavored to portray, as graphically as possible, life in California at a time when the restraints of society had to some extent become released." The booklet lists the lyrics to twenty-nine songs with titles like, "A Miners Meeting", "California Bank Robbers", "California Stage Company", "I'm Sad and Lonely Here", "Sacramento Gals", "The Miner's Dream", "The Rowdy", and "You Won Don't Believe It." Of particular note is the section at the end titled "Mining Localities Peculiar to California" in which is listed all the California mining camps of the time including "Hell's Delight", "Gouge Eye", "Skunk Gulch", "Dead Man's Bar", "Loafer's Retreat", Murderer's Bar", "Nigger Hill", "Poker Flat", "Git-up and Git", "One Eye", and ninety more. Printed cover contains a mining scene with miners, cabins, sluice box and river. Cover is detached but intact with some chipping. An important early California Gold Rush piece.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding
