Gold Bond from the Cochise County, Tombstone, Arizona Territory, 1881. As Tombstone's population grew, so did its political power. In 1881, the Arizona Legislature established Cochise County. No longer would the nearest county office be a long two-day ride. Built in 1882 at a cost of nearly $50,000, the Cochise County Courthouse was a stylish building as well as a comfortable symbol of law and stability in these turbulent times. It housed the offices of the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and the board of supervisors. The jail was at the rear, under the courtroom. John Slaughter was a sheriff, virtually cleared the county of outlaws. So this is the gold bond that raised the money to build this famous landmark.

Very scarce beautiful Gold bond no. 41 from Tombstone A. T. Has a copper filigree border around a great vignette of the courthouse. Two gilded $250. Dollars in gold coin vignettes and at bottom right corner a gilded miner with pick a shovel. This is a fully paid $250. Bond with only one coupon missing. Framed measures approximately 24" x 25".

Fine, has not been taken out of frame.
