Geronimo: A Large Ponytail Hair Lock from the Legendary Apache Leader. Nicely mounted along with a copy of an original photo. It is accompanied by truly remarkable provenance, detailing the complete chain of ownership. Adventurer Allen C. Bowman was hunting with the Kiowa in 1871, and met Geronimo when the chief entered the Indians' camp to smoke the pipe of peace with them. He also encountered Geronimo again in 1885 when he was captured by the U.S. Army. From Bowman's reminiscences it is a bit unclear as to which meeting was the occasion of his cutting of Geronimo's hair, although the actual act is described in fascinating detail. The chain of ownership from Bowman is complete and thoroughly documented. A copy of the complete provenance will be provided to prospective bidders upon request. Certificate of authentication from John Reznikoff, University Archives, widely regarded as the leading authenticator of personal hair samples.

This large lock is truly amazing, being approximately 12" long and including, per Reznikoff, literally thousands of strands. Of course the "break value" of this lock would be tremendous if one chose to sell a dozen strands at a time. But in its present form it is so impressive and evocative that it would seem a shame to do so. Perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire an important hair lock from one of the most famous nineteenth century Native American chiefs.
