Fascinating Nineteenth Century Scrapbook from a Prominent Veteran of the California Gold Rush. Samuel Curtis Upham (1819-1885) was the ultimate American entrepreneur. Among his many pursuits, he took a stab at gold-mining in California in 1849 before retreating to San Francisco to become a newspaper publisher. In 1850, he returned to the east to pursue a variety of personal and business endeavors, but remained active in various organizations composed of gold rush veterans. Many of the items in this album relate to organizations such as the Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California, the Society of California Pioneers, and the Office of the Territorial Pioneers of California. Included is Upham's handwritten manuscript of an 1878 address upon the dedication of a monument to James Lick, a former president of the Society of California Pioneers who parlayed Gold Rush era business ventures into vast California landholdings, which made him the wealthiest man in the state when he died in 1878. Among the more interesting items in the scrapbook is an autograph note from famed California pioneer John C. Frémont, along with a printed invitation to a reception honoring him. Also to be found are a variety of poems, hymns, and sheet music authored by Upham, eight different Civil War cacheted envelopes, a signed handwritten manuscript honoring a deceased Mexican War veteran, and many other items of interest.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
