    Description

Elizabeth Custer: An Important Letter Written to Her Discussing Efforts to Recover his Personal Articles after Little Big Horn. The two-page letter was written from Fort Peck in Montana Territory on December 9, 1876, by Thomas J. Mitchell, "U.S. Indian Agent." He is responding to a missive by Mrs. Custer, and assuring her that "(he) will make every effort in (his) power to procure the relics of the late Gen. Custer of which you speak." He cites his contact with "some friendly Uncpapas [Hunkpapas]" who have promised to help. Mitchell "(has) traces of the pistol, and so as soon as I can ascertain with any certainty that I will be successful in my efforts I will apprise you of the fact." The entire letter is pictured in our website presentation of this lot. 7.75" x 10" and in beautiful condition with original fold lines.

Mrs. Custer was actively communicating with the Army to press them to recover her husband's personal effects, and it is interesting to see that she was also reaching out to Indian agents in that effort.
