    Description

EARLY FRONTIER KNIFE - HALLMARKED WITH SHEATH - ca 1850-70. 14.75" overall with 9.6" blade. This is a nice early Frontier knife with an original sheath and a deep pictorial maker's mark, "TC" with an alligator. This maker's mark is not classified, but is likely the work of a Sheffield firm, due to both the style of mark and the construction methods of the knife. The ferrule is nickel silver, and the handle is ebony. The blade is in the early trade style, which was made by both French and English firms. The sheath is tooled and has a belt catch on the back, not a loop. The blade has uniform darkening and spotting, and the handle has some older cracks. A fine original Frontier Bowie or skinning knife with an original sheath.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
