    D. O. Mills & Company 2nd Exchange Sacramento, California, 1861. When Darius Ogden Mills heard about the gold discovery in early 1849, he quit his banking job in New York and went west. He planned on mining, but that was short lived. He then decided to sell products to miners that they desperately needed. In a very short time, D.O. Mills had accumulated a small fortune in gold. He then ordered a whole shipload of mining products from the east, but by the time they got to the west coast, there was a flood of merchants trying to sell their products to miners, so business was not that good. He ended up falling back on what he knew best and that was banking. He set up a small bank in Sacramento. Once again, in a very short period of time, he made an incredible fortune and as more gold was taken out of the mines so grew his fortune. He cashed out in 1862 and sold his bank. Later on D.O. Mills became a figurehead President of the Bank of California.

Early Sacramento Gold Rush item, second of exchange promissory note. Have two beautiful vignettes of ships, a beautiful sailing ship and a steam paddle wheeler ship. Signed by D. O. Mills & Company. Measures approximately 8.75" x 4.25".

    Fine-very fine.
