Sheriff's Invitation to a Hanging, Fairfield, California, 1887. Sheriff James Roney of Fairfield, California sent this invitation for a hanging to W. S. Dean, Sheriff of Quincy, Plumas County, California, to be delivered to Mr. W. S. Dean.

The original envelope and imprinted invitation are both black bordered. Both printed and manuscript. The document reads: "Mr. W. S. Dean Dear Sir you are respectively invited to be at the execution of Michael Keefe, which will take place at Fairfield, Solano County, on Friday April 15, 1887, between the hours of 12 and 4 P.M. Respectfully, James Roney, Sheriff, Fairfield, April 1, 1887." Envelope is postmarked from Fairfield, April 7, 1887. Needless to say this ephemeral item is very rare. Invitation measures approximately 4.5" x 7".

Very fine, light fold on invitation, envelope has piece missing form flap.
