Photograph of Old Piper Dan Ranch, Tongue River, Montana Territory. The Tongue River is a tributary of the Yellowstone River through Wyoming and Montana. It rises along the northern slope of the Bighorn Mountains in north central Wyoming and flows northeast, past the town of Sheridan, and then into Montana, forming the eastern boundary of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. It joins the Yellowstone near the town of Miles City. In August of 1873, the Tongue River was the site of a cavalry engagement between the Sioux Indians and George Armstrong Custer.

Photograph by L. A. Huffman, a great early photograph of this elusive man's ranch. Piper Dan, like other close-mounted individuals on the frontier, never told anyone his name, nor whence he came. The story is told that for a long time he received a newspaper from Canada. Then the paper stopped coming and not long afterward Piper Dan disappeared. Huffman captured this great photograph before his log shack burned.

    Very fine.
