Outlaw Frank James Envelope Addressed to His Wife

Outlaw Frank James Autograph Envelope Addressed to His Wife. 5" x 3", addressed to "Mrs. A. F. James / Independence / Mo.", postmarked Gallatin [Missouri], September 27, 1883. Opening tears on one end and slightly toned with old mounting remnants on the reverse, otherwise in fine condition.

In 1882, after over twenty years of running and hiding from the law, Frank James surrendered to Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden in Jefferson City, Missouri. Afterwards he was held in Independence for three weeks and later to Gallatin where he spent a year awaiting trial. This envelope, the letter now lost to history, was certainly sent by Frank James as he was held at Gallatin. The letter was sent to his wife Annie Ralston, whom he had married in 1874.
