    Description

Frank James: Transmittal Envelope Addressed to "Capt. Frank James" With His Pencil Notation, Circa 1888-1890. A Kansas City Times envelope addressed "Capt. Frank James / Care of A & E. Mittenthal / No. 608 & 610 Elm Street / Dallas / Texas / Personal". In pencil, above the address Frank has written "Salvon", the reference to which is unknown. A. & E. Mittenthal was a dry goods company in Dallas, later relocating to New York City about 1890 or 1891. Conventional lore holds that Frank James worked at the Dallas dry goods store Sanger Brothers in Dallas, though it has likely been confused with his employment at Mittenthal's. Cursory research fails to turn up the significance of the name "Salvon". A wonderful item with association to the noted outlaw's "retirement" years.
