Description
Edward Bohlin Saddle with Silver Conchos and Matching Silver Bridle/Breast Collar. This saddle was purchased from the Bohlin store on Sunset Boulevard by an owner who worked the Arabian horse show circuit in Burbank, California just after World War II. Having a 14-inch seat, 15-inch swells and a 5-inch cantle with Cheyenne roll. Very similar to the "Payne Roper" in the catalogs of that period noted for round skirts and this horn design. The original order added the tapaderos and beautiful engraved dome conchos. The saddle is attractively and extensively stamped in an exotic floral pattern. This deep ornamentation covers all surfaces except for the seat.
A total of fourteen 2-inch sterling silver conchos with six on the skirts and four on each tapadero. Wood and steel flat stirrups. Fine original tooled leather cinch strap and three-colored cinch.
This saddle ensemble is complemented with a matching headstall and breast collar. The headstall is similar to the "Greenfield" model from earlier in that decade. Containing thirteen sterling silver conchas in various sizes. Beautiful brow band and nose band connected with chain and additional conchas each marked BOHLINMADE/CALIF./HOLLYWOOD. Bridle leather with 3 engraved buckles also marked: BOHLINMADE/CALIF./HOLLYWOOD. Unmarked aluminum swivel bit with cricket. 6 foot reins with buckles and bands. Sold together with matching breast collar with a charming Bohlin-marked horseshoe buckle. 23 silver segments in the leather and beautiful 2-inch diameter sterling silver concha as a center piece. This is a stunning floral design with strong sunburst motif in the middle of the flower. Concha set on circular leather rosette which is marked on the reverse: BOHLINMADE/CALIF./HOLLYWOOD.
This saddle was made during a very prosperous time for Edward Bohlin. In the competitive circles of parades and big horse shows of the Southern California tradition, the outfits of horse and rider were part of what the show was about. This roping saddle then is a fine combination of a very old California ranching tradition and glittering showmanship.
Sold together with a signed statement from the consignor detailing the original purchase and the subsequent sale to the consignor's father.
Condition: Fine. Leather is supple, soft and well-preserved. All silver is original showing light honest age wear and patina. Light fading to relief edges of swells, seat and cantle. One minor repair to throat latch leather. Minor crackling observed near brow band buckle. Stirrups and tapaderos with light scuffs.
