    Description

Colorado Gold Rush: Pike's Peak or Bust Painting. Following the California Gold Rush of 1849, a second gold rush occurred in the Kansas-Nebraska Territories and in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The motto of the prospectors was "Pike's Peak or Bust!" The rush lasted from 1858 to 1861. Boom towns and ghost towns appeared, along with mining camps and substantial settlements. The boom sputtered, but advanced technology eventually created a profitable gold and silver mining industry in Colorado. The starry-eyed prospectors were the often the butt of satire and ridicule. Their slogan lead naturally to the flipside of the gold-fever coin; namely, the "Bust!" An engraving published in 1870 by W. M. Cary proved quite popular. It showed a Colorado Gold Rush prospector at the end of the line. He lies dead alongside his covered wagon. An Indian arrow through the wagon's covering is evidence of his probable cause of death. His ox sniffs at the skull of another beast of burden whose fate he is destined to share. This 16" x 13" oil on canvas signed Jim Smith is a copy of that engraving. It is quite well-executed and dates circa 1884 .It is housed in an ornate gilt frame by Shussler Brothers of San Francisco. There are two sections of raised wooden molding missing. The painting is in excellent condition. It is quite a handsome piece, ready to hang and enjoy.
