Carson City, Nevada Stage Coach Broadside Circa 1872. This very rare 11" x 14" broadside announces service to "Lake Tahoe, The Gem of the Sierra." Service would be provided on J. M. Benton's Stage Line, in company with driver Hank Monk, with connecting service with the Virginia and Truckee Railroad Trains. Hank Monk is the best known stage coach driver of the Old West. He was made famous by none other than Mark Twain, in his book "Roughing It" where Monk is quoted as telling Horace Greeley, who was in a rush to reach Placerville, California, to "Keep your seat, Horace, and I'll get you there on time. J. M. Benton maintained a livery stable and stage line in Carson City. While not as well known as Hank Monk, he was a colorful character in Nevada history. On January 16, 1885, he shot and killed a man who was attacking his wife. The killing was ruled justifiable homicide by the court. Very few of these Benton's Stage line advertisement have survived. The specimen offered here, housed in a period frame, has been laid onto a 1924 San Francisco department store box top, with a few areas of loss, as shown.
