California Gold Rush: Four Exceptional 1849-1854 Letters from Miner John Carter, Plus his Rare Original Gold Dust Pouch. Four pages.
    (1) December 1849 letter describing conditions and prices in San Francisco and Sacramento.
    (2) September 1852 letter from Taylorsville, describing the use of a Mexican machine called "Arustras" to grind up gold quartz.
    (3) December 1852 letter from Plum Valley commenting on work and scarcity of provisions.
    (4) August 1854 letter with great content about what miners earn: "...if one makes 5 dollars per day he will do more than I think he will but he might possibly hit one of the middling prizes and make a hundred. The miners on this creek are making from nothing to 100 dollars per day but how often do they make 100 dollars a day - as often as they would draw the capital prizes in a lottery...I have never been sorry yet that I came to California but would you advise one to come to California? I would advise them to stay at home..."

Complete typed transcripts of all four letters are included with the lot. The canvas gold dust pouch is marked "Wells Fargo Boston, for John Carter." On the other side is written "A.M. Peters Wells Fargo & Co." (crossed out), "the sum of $8906.66" (crossed out), and "$676.60 Boston."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
