California Gold Digger Print. This hand-colored lithograph measures 10" x 13.5" and is titled "California Gold Diggers. Mining Operations on the Western shore of the Sacramento River". It was published by Kellogg & Comstock of New York and Hartford, and Ensign & Thayer of Buffalo, likely around 1850. The scene is highly-populated and depicts African-Americans, Native Americans and whites all engaged in gold prospecting. A tent and teepee appear on one hilltop. Given such close quarters and the stakes involved, it is not surprising that a fight has broken out, with a soldier attempting to intervene. The colors remain quite varied and vibrant. The clean has been mounted on a thin backing material for conservation purposes and has undergone some professional restoration in the borders. It is both historical and charming, and has Brueghel-esque characteristics.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
