    Description

Currier & Ives "Prairie Fires of the Great West" Hand Colored Print. Small folio size, 15.75" x 12" (it was not issued in large size). 1871-dated, it depicts fires set by Native Americans in order to drive buffalo herds toward their hunting grounds. The herd can be seen in the distance between the train and the flames. A marvelous image ranked by Robert Kipp in 1991 as number six on his list of the fifty top Currier images. Paper is evenly toned, but colors are very strong and borders are wide and uniform.
