Buffalo Soldiers: An Early 1873-74 Archive. The nickname was probably given to African American troopers by Native Americans, who found their dark hair similar to that of the buffalo.

Offered here are three folio-size muster rolls, all from Texas. Two are from the 24th U.S. Infantry, and one from the 9th Cavalry regiment. Many of the soldiers have signed with their "marks," as most were freed slaves who had not been taught to read or write. The two unit commanders, Colonel Edward Hatch and Colonel Joseph Potter had both been brigadier generals in the Civil War and saw extensive duty in the West during the Indian Wars period.

Also included are ten pay vouchers from Buffalo soldiers. The archive is in very good condition, with typical minor tears and folds.
