Buffalo Soldier Document Archive: Important Records of African-American Army Units Serving on the Western Frontier. Twenty pieces in all, dating from 1874-75: Four muster rolls, and sixteen paycheck vouchers from the 9th Cavalry and 24th Infantry. These units were stationed along the Rio Grande in West Texas, where they struggled to protect the locals from marauding thieves and rustlers despite racial prejudice and resentment of any form of of Federal authority. Among their famous adversaries were Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Victorio, Billy the Kid, and Pancho Villa. Eighteen Congressional Medals of Honor were presented to Buffalo Soldiers for their exploits on the frontier.

Each muster roll folds out to an impressive 32" x 20" size for display, and contains detailed records of the entire command: name, rank, place of enlistment, deductions for clothes and tobacco, and the net pay given to each man, who has signed beside his own entry to acknowledge receipt. Special remarks for the War Department are written near the conclusion, detailing their location and activities.

The 10" x 8" pay vouchers, signed by the soldier on both sides, are additional receipts for their army pay. Further details and the names of the individual soldiers on the pay vouchers will be found with the website presentation of this lot.
