Buffalo Bill's Wild West: An Important Archive of Thirty-one Mounted Photos. These images were taken as the Wild West set up in Paris for its first visit since 1889. The pictures show the camp and arena being built in the Champ de Mars, site of the Exposition Universelle of 1900. The Ferris wheel- "La Grande Roué- was at the southeast end of the Champ de Mars, and the Eiffel Tower stood at the northwest end, near the river. These pictures show some of the buildings that survived after the Exposition. Some of the highlights (aside from the obvious delight of seeing the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop to the construction) include: the background showing the east end of the exhibit buildings; the parade passing in front of the agricultural and industrial exhibit buildings; and the parade of Indians moving to the Champs Elysees before going back to the Champ de Mars. Two photos show several Indian men seated, including Iron Tail second from the right. His status as chief can certainly be seen in the war bonnet he is wearing in the family group photo.
The photo of the Indians painting their tipi may be unique. Many pictures survive showing painted tipis, but this is the only one we've seen that has Indians painting theirs. A particularly charming image shows the Indians in the dining tent with coffee from the huge urns.
The shot of the soldier being shaved is great on its own merits but also shows "Major" or "Arizona John" Burke, the press agent, looking on.
The next to last photo includes Buffalo Bill in profile and partial, while the next shot shows Cody plainly along with Burke. Most important is the unique 11.5" x 9" arena shot, which actually depicts the show being performed.
Some of these images are light as made, but all are in excellent condition. Aside from the large arena views, sizes range from 4" x 3" to 6.5" x 4.625", all shown to scale. All thirty-one images may be viewed in our web site presentation of this lot. It is interesting to note that the pictures of the little boy in a war bonnet was made into a famous Buffalo Bill's Wild West poster!
