Bill Pickett and 101 Ranch: A Nice Display Group of Six Custom-framed Pieces. Bill Pickett "The Colored Cowboy" was one of the most interesting characters on the scene in Wild West shows of the early 1900s. He is said to have "invented" bull-dogging and was described by no less a Western icon than Teddy Roosevelt as "one of the best trained ropers and riders the West has produced." For years he performed at the famed 101 Ranch. This collection includes: (1) A terrific broadside picturing Pickett and promoting a five-reel film featuring him. "Give your colored patrons a treat. Book a picture that's different", it suggests to theater managers. 14.5" x 16.5" as framed. (2) Handwritten letter from Pickett's younger brother to Zach Miller, asking for particulars of his brother's death. Framed to 13" x 15.5". (3) Colorful season schedule for 101 Ranch for 1927. Framed to 13" x 23.5". (4) TLS from F. B. Hutchinson to Col. Joe Miller seeking employment. He claimed to have "managed the Buffalo Bill show for ten years", and also to have managed the Sells-Floto Circus. Framed to 11" x 13". (5) Zach Miller TLS about hiring trick ropers and a horse transaction. Framed to 14.5" x 18.5". (6) Zach Miller TLS about buying a Guernsey heifer for the princely sum of $14! Moisture damage. Framed to 12.5" x 14.5".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
