Ben Varga of San Antonio, Texas: Single Loop Side Holster and Money Belt. The border tooled hand-stamped holster, with a closed toe, is for a Colt "Lightning" pistol. The money belt measures 35" to the original middle hole and adjusts down to 33½" at the smallest and up to 36½" at the longest. There is a row of cartridge loops for forty individual .38 caliber rounds. The holster marked "Ben Varga/ Maker/ San Antonio" above the loop, shows wear with a few splits. Ben Varga, a veteran of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution and a saddle maker, left his homeland for the United States settling in San Antonio in 1853. With skills to meet consumers' demands on the Texas frontier, Varga opened his own saddlery. The fine 3" belt is marked "G 1375", but without a maker's mark. The belt, with a clipped corner nickel buckle, is fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
