Autograph Letter Signed Inquiring about the Execution of Crawford "Cherokee Bill" Goldsby, 1900. On a sunny afternoon on March 17, 1896, Crawford "Cherokee Bill" Goldsby was escorted by prison guards, as well as his mother Ellen, Amanda Foster, an elderly lady who had help raise him, and Father Pius, a Catholic priest. They all walked to the gallows, where Goldsby was to be hanged for murder. Looking around at the crowd that had gathered to witness the occasion, he stated, "This is about as good a day to die as any".

Manuscript letter reads: "May 7, 1900. Dear Sir, Crawford Goldsby, known as Cherokee Bill, was tried by Isaac Parker and Hanged @ Fort Smith. Will you send me the date of his Execution, and also state for what murder he was hanged? Where the crime was committed. I believe he was convicted of more than one murder of how many? How long after he shot a man in ____ to escape was he hanged. Send bill for this. Yours Wilbert F. Bryant."

    Reply at bottom, in pencil, reads: "1900 - May 9, hanged on 17 Mar. 1896 for murder of Ernest Molton - Indictments for Mar. 96, 106 & 113. __ on 19, Mar. 1896 - No. 106-Erenst Molton, No. 113-D.
