    Autograph Letter regarding "Man Hung Two Men Murdered," Jefferson Territory, Denver, 1860. The Provisional Government of the Territory of Jefferson was an extralegal and unrecognized territory of the United States that existed from October 24, 1859 until the creation of the Territory of Colorado on February 28, 1861. Its territory covered a broad swath surrounding the region of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, and was a functioning democratically elected government until the organization of Colorado Territory in 1861. At that time, the successor Jefferson County was permanently created, taking its name from its predecessor and incorporating the heart of its territory.

    This manuscript letter reads, in part: "Denver (Jefferson Territory) June 22, 1860. Dear Husband. I have wrote to you once sence [sic] you left home our babe [sic] is dead he died May the 30...and put him in the coffin myself there was no men to bury him till the minester [sic] went out and got some men to go to the grave...(Written by daughter in part) Dear Father Mr. Fester has took Mrs. Fester up to Fair Play (Colorado gold country) Mr. Blundell has got three claims up thair [sic] There has been a man hung and two men Murdered sence [sic] you left here and they think that they will hang that man that killed that man and the man that was hung was a Dutch man he had wife and child in the____ he said that the man wife that was killed was kinived [sic] in with him to kill her husband and he said that she said that she would Marry him and he could share in the___ and provisons [sic] and they would go up to blue..."
