Annie Oakley and Frank Butler: A Wonderful 1891 Christmas Card from the Famous Pair. Annie and Frank sent Christmas greetings to family and a wide circle of friends each year. Christmas 1891 was special, though. The Butlers were in Glasgow, Scotland with the Wild West Show as shown by the post mark. Annie's triumphs in Buffalo Bill's Wild West and her public shooting exploits (this in an era when shooting vied to be the nation's second-favorite spectator sport after horse-racing) had made her one of the most famous women in America. So Frank and Annie created a special greeting, one that incorporated one of Frank's verses along with illustrations that suggested Annie's public persona as a western girl. The two cards are accompanied by the original ribbon which bound them together. Annie's Christmas card is extremely rare; only one other is known for sure and is in a public collection. Some age browning, otherwise excellent condition. Original red silk ribbon. Each panel 4.5" x 4".

This lot was bought by the consignor in Heritage Auction #6079. It was among the items consigned to that auction by the daughters of Billie Butler, grand-daughter of Frank Butler's younger brother William. From the Collection of the Late Edward C. Gillette.
