    A. J. Russell: An Important Large Wyoming Railroad Photo, Circa 1868 - 1869. A. J. Russell received his training in photography from Guy Fox of Brady's studio, and in 1863 became the first official photographer of the U.S. Army. During the Civil War he concentrated in particular on the work of Army engineers, with a special focus on railroads. Clearly his interest persisted, for in 1868 he obtained a contract from the Union Pacific Railroad to document the construction of rail lines in the West. He made three trips west on their behalf, one in 1868 and two in 1869. He was present at the driving of the "Golden Spike" at Promontory Point, and his photos of that historic event are perhaps his best-known.

The fine original image offered here bears vintage markings on verso, "Windmill / Laramie, Wyoming" and "Photo by A. J. Russell." The scene is of a classic steam locomotive stopped at a water tank, overshadowed by a huge windmill. In the background are several large, warehouse-like buildings. Russell photos such as this one are coveted by both railroad and Western photography collectors alike. Excellent condition, with a few very minor small soil marks in the sky around the windmill, which detract minimally, noted for accuracy. The photo is standard 13" x 10" size for the series.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
