    Description

A Fine Gold Handled Presentation Cane with Gold Quartz Inlay. Finely engraved on both sides of the handle: "Presented to J. A. Chapman / Mayor of the City of Portland (Oregon) by his esteemed friends." On the flat back end of the handle is engraved the date, "Oct. 26th, 1876." Inlaid into the "knee" of the handle is a nice oval specimen of white quartz veined with gold, in perfect condition, length 19 mm. Overall condition of the 34.5" cane is choice near-mint.

Chapman, a trained medical doctor who served as a surgeon in the Civil War, served as medical officer for an expedition to Oregon and chose to put down roots there, opening a medical practice. He was one of the most prominent citizens of early Portland, and served three separate terms as mayor: 1867-68, 1875-77, and 1882-85. It was during his second term that he was presented with this elegant cane as a token of appreciation from the citizenry.
