    Description

1910 Reno, Nevada Boxing Photograph "Fight of the Century" Jack Johnson vs. James Jeffries. 9" x 7", mounted to a backing board to an overall size of 12.5" x 9.5". Percy Dana Photo, San Francisco. An important early 20th Century photo titled "The Crowd at the Ringside, Reno, July 4, 1910". The image was taken by San Francisco photographer, Percy Dana. Earlier Dana had become famous for his views of the destruction following the earthquake and ensuing fire in 1906. The fight was billed as "The Fight of the Century" and pitted the most famous and notorious African-American of the time, Jack Johnson against James J. Jeffries. Johnson won the fight in the 15th round after knocking Jeffries down twice. The fight triggered race-riots across the United States. Johnson had earned $65,000 for the match which was watched by 20,000 fans. Johnson went on to be infamous for his unconventional, for the times, attitude. As a black man, he broke a powerful taboo by consorting with white women. A reporter once viewed a succession of prostitutes parade into and out of his hotel room and asked Johnson the secret to his staying power, to which he replied, "Eat jellied eels and think distant thoughts." In 1912 he was convicted and sent to prison for transporting women across state lines for "immoral purposes". He died in a car crash on June 10, 1946. The edges of the photograph are slightly irregular and there are a few closed tears present, otherwise the image is clear and in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
