1910 Nevada Political Broadside - Nominees of the Republican Part State of Nevada and Washoe County. 31.75" x 23". Printed by the Reno Printing Company and published by Plecarpo & Calkins. A spectacularly visual political broadside that includes the images of twenty-two candidates and twenty-seven overall. Each election hopeful is promoted with their image and the office for which they were running. The election results were nearly a complete sweep for the Republican Party, not only in Washoe County but also the entire state of Nevada. This broadside holds special significance for two reasons: all of the statewide candidates were running on their recognition as mining men from the southern Nevada mining districts of Goldfield and Tonopah; and it would be these elected officials that would in 1910 outlaw gambling in the entire state, including slot machines. Gambling would not regain legal status until 1931. Tasker Oddie, the owner of Tonopah Mining Company, is on the ticket as a candidate for governor. He later served as a senator. George Nixon, on the ballot running for senator, had been the owner of Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company. It was Nixon and his company that ran afoul of the Western Federation of Miners Union, the relationship so adversarial that President Theodore Roosevelt was forced to call out Federal troops to quell the riots. Other notables on the broadside include Edwin Ewing, who would later become mayor of Reno; William Easton who was sheriff in Lander County during its heyday, and C. P. Ferrel, who shortly after this election was involved in a shootout with bank robbers. This very large broadside represents an early 20th century look at Nevada's intertwined political and mining interests at a time in its growth when important policies, including gambling were being formed. Old repair on the left margin, else in very good condition.
