1909 Presentation Photo Album Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, Postal Telegraph Cable Company. Each photo measures approximately 3" x 4" and are mounted two to a page, 12 pages, 48 total photographs. The album contains 48 photographs professionally mounted into what could be described as a hard-bound book. Each image is accompanied by descriptive text. The full title being "Various pictures of the line constructed by the Postal Telegraph Cable Company over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in California during the summer of 1909". Included are images of wagons, workers, poles, camps and even the snow sheds built by Chinese laborers to cover avalanche areas during the construction of the Trans-Continental railroad in the late 1860s. The construction seems to follow the Central Pacific route through the Sierra Nevada in California to Nevada. The photos are extremely well done and were probably done by a professional photographer hired by the company to document the construction. The company was originally established by John W. Mackay of Comstock Lode fame in the 1880s. At the time of this album's images the company was owned and run by his son Clarence Mackay. The line was to provide telegraph communication between the California and Nevada mountains. A very rare and most probably singular album documenting this important construction. Fine condition.
