1881 New Mexico Territory Letter With Indian Content. Four pages, 5" x 8", Manuelitto, New Mexico, November 25, 1881, in pencil. An interesting letter written from John Brumbaugh, an employee of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad doing bridge work between central Arizona and New Mexico to an unnamed friend. He writes in part: "...there is no society here...& a woman is a curiosity plenty of Indians here (but don't tell my folks I sleep with 2 Sharps rifles by my side). Today I seen the great chief Manuelito who is chief of the Navaho tribe numbering about 10000. He is peaceable but sometimes the young bucks become unruly & go on the war path. He does not have the control over them he used to have." Brumbaugh also enlists his friend to help him obtain a job as a mail agent. A legible letter, with the usual fold creases, in very good condition.
