[Nevada Mining]. Lot of Eleven Photographs of Searchlight, Nevada. This beautiful collection of black and white photographs depicts the small town of Searchlight in the early part of the twentieth century. The photographs highlight the barrenness of the surrounding landscape and area mining operations. Each image measures 8" x 6" (sight) and is matted to an overall size of 12" x 10". They include: a photograph of Searchlight taken at a distance from a nearby rise with a truck travelling down the road toward the town; piles of earth, presumably extracted from a nearby mine, piled near a small, wooden building outside of which sits a circa 1910s truck; a hillside with scrub bushes and cactus; hillside and a "road"; stuffed bags near an obscured mine entrance, across which is written, in ink: "600 ft x 50 ft x 3 ft $30.00"; mine shaft entrance with two men, presumably miners, at left; mine shaft with wood beams; hillside with a pile of ore in the foreground (indicated by text) and a miner with tool; rock pile; landscape with several building in the foreground and larger buildings in the distance, the site of a mill is indicated, in ink with an arrow, as is water near the foothills of the distant mountains; and a timber headframe above a mine shaft and mine car.

Searchlight was a boom town at the turn of the century when gold was discovered by George Frederick Colton sometime after 1897. Between 1907 and 1910, $7 million dollars was extracted. The last area gold mine closed in 1953.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
