[Johnny Baker]. Photographs (3) of Della Farrell. A stunning portrait of horsewoman extraordinaire Della Farrell, 6" x 9", mounted on a 12"x 16" card, Paris, 1887. The photograph was taken by and bears the embossed-eagle stamp of Prince Roland Bonaparte, a great nephew of the emperor. Bonaparte's fame was enhanced by the remarkable record he made of Buffalo Bill's Wild West personnel. He was an early anthropologist who was fascinated by American "types," especially the Native Americas but including the beautiful yet rugged cowgirls.

Della Agnes Farrell was the real thing, a Nebraska ranch girl who with her sister Bessie joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1887 to perform for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Like Annie Oakley, she was small, not much over 5' tall. She and Johnny Baker, "the Cowboy Kid," fell in love and married in 1891. They had two daughters, Della Cody and Gladys Agnes, before Della fell ill and died in 1896. This lot also includes two miniatures of Della on a rearing horse, made from a photograph taken by the great Italian photographer Count Giuseppi Primoli in 1890. Light toning and wear throughout, with a small section of the lower corner missing from the portrait's card. Else a very fine collection of photographs of an amazing woman.
