    Description

Wright Brothers: 1903 Kitty Hawk Plane Fabric Swatch with Nick Wright Signed Certificate. 2" x 2" swatch of cotton fabric, part of the wing covering for the Wright Flyer, framed together with an 8.5" x 11" certificate titled "Original Fabric 1903 Wright Flyer". It is inscribed to John A. Gillikin and reads as follows: "When Orville Wright prepared the 1903 Wright flyer for public exhibition in 1928, he replaced the original fabric because it had been damaged by submersion in flood waters in 1913. He covered the flying surfaces with new fabric of identical material. After Orville's death in 1948, his executors found some of the original wing coverings carefully preserved and labeled in his laboratory at 15 North Broadway in Dayton, Ohio. This piece of fabric is from the section that covered the lower left wing of the first Wright aeroplane on December 17, 1903. On that day, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the world's first free, controlled and sustained flights in a power-driven heavier-than-air flying machine." It is personally inscribed at the bottom: "From the Wright Family - Thanks for your outstanding interpretations of the Wright Brothers [signed] Nick Wright." Framed to an overall size of 13" x 16"

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
