Wright Brothers: 1903 Kitty Hawk Plane Fabric Swatch with Ivonette Wright Miller Document Signed. 8.5" x 11". This imprinted statement of authenticity is inscribed to Mark Baker and reads as follows: "1903 Wright 'Kitty Hawk' Original Fabric / When Orville Wright prepared the Kitty Hawk machine for public exhibition, the original fabric had to be replaced, as it had been under water during the Dayton Flood of 1913. He substituted new fabric of identical material. After his death in 1948, we found that he had preserved some of the original covering of the wings. We certify that this piece of fabric was used by Orville and Wilbur Wright on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the world's first heavier-than-air flights in which man achieved free, controlled, powered, and sustained flight." Ivonette Wright Miller (1896-1995) was the niece of Orville and Wilbur Wright and later served as the "semi-official" Wright family historian. She became the third American woman to fly when, on August 29, 1911, she rode beside her uncle, Orville, in the Wright B Flyer. Mrs. Miller played an important role in the donation of the original 1903 Wright Flyer to the Smithsonian Institution. Her husband, Harold S. Miller, was a co-executor of Orville's estate. The certificate is accompanied by the original transmittal envelope to Mark Baker and signed by Ivonette Wright Miller. Very fine.
