Transcontinental Railroad: Promontory Point Utah CDV. Carte-de-visite depicting people gathered at Promontory Point, Utah for the official ceremony driving the last spike in the railroad tracks that completed the Transcontinental Railroad. The event took place on May 10, 1869, connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads. Leland Stanford was chosen to drive in the golden spike (now housed at Stanford University). In this view, a central clearing is surrounded by on-lookers. A section of the tracks are clearly visible. One man holds a shovel. There appears to be some sort of canvas sign or banner to the extreme left. A telegraph operator has his equipment set up at a table in the central foreground. Another man is mounted on a ladder to the right. One locomotive is visible to the extreme right. The verso is inscribed "Driving the last spike" and has the imprint of Savage & Ottinger of Great Salt Lake City, Utah. An historic and rare image, rarely encountered in CDV format.
