Transcontinental Railroad: 1864 Invitation to Inaugural Union Pacific Track Laying. 8.25" x 5.75" engraved invitation on card stock inscribed "U.P.Ry.E.D. San Francisco New York The Union Pacific Railway Company Eastern Division invite you to be Present as per letter of Mr. Samuel Hallett to celebrate the opening of the First Section of Forty Miles of their Road West from the Missouri River." The date of this planned event was August 18, 1864. Engraved by Latimer Brothers & Seymour of New York. The vignette shows two Native Americans standing before a waterfall while a train crosses a trestle stretching across the river from one mountainside to another. Statement of provenance on verso from Eugene Field II, dated April 29, 1935, stating "This original invitation came from the library of my father, Eugene Field." The entrepreneur Hallett was intent on building the first 40 miles of track heading west from the Missouri River, from Kansas City to Lawrence. If successful, the venture would have been extended to meet the California section being constructed eastward from Sacramento. Cover letters and invitations were sent to influential people. Unfortunately, Hallett was shot dead about a month before the celebration and the project aborted. We have been unable to locate any other examples that have sold at auction. A rare piece of history.
