Description

Three Original Photographs of Yuri Gagarin's Landing at Engels. Each 4.75" x 3.5". Included is a letter by Major A. N. Gassiev, the commander of the military garrison, granting Defense Minister Marshal Malinovsky these pictures.

These three photographs were taken at the location of the landing. One shows Yuri Gagarin embracing the first woman who came up to him after he landed; another shows Major Gassiev; and the final photograph features local people and soldiers surrounding Gagarin, who is still wearing his blue under suit. Inscribed on the back of the photos in Major Gassiev's hand, "Photo at 11:35 Moscow Time, 12.04.61"; stamped "from the personal Archives Y. A. Golivanov" (Gagarin's Biographer). These images are extremely rare.

Gassiev's congratulatory letter, which accompanies the three photos, is written to Rodion Yakovlevich and is signed "Major Gassiev A.N. /Gassiev A.N." on April 14, 1961. It reads, "It is our honor and privilege to give you this small gift - first pictures of the hero-cosmonaut - Y. A Gagarin after his successful flight and landing on our Soviet territory. We are proud of the fact that we were the first ones to meet him at the place of landing and to take him to our barracks where he reported to the government of the CCCP about his successful return from space. Wish you good health for the good of our nation."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
