DescriptionThe International Rail Road Company $1000 Bond 1874. One page. Horizontal 16.75" x 13.75". January 15, 1874. Complete with all sixty coupons integrally attached. Signed by the railroad's president, Galusha Aaron Grow, and countersigned by the secretary. Features a beautiful locomotive vignette and the company's seal. The bond is slightly toned at the edges with old fold creases; otherwise it is in very good condition.
The International Railroad Company was chartered on August 5, 1870, the most liberal charter ever granted by the Texas legislature. In 1870 grants of state land in aid of railroad construction were prohibited by the Constitution of 1869, and the charter granted to this railroad, at a rate of $10,000 a mile, bonds of the state to run for thirty years and to bear interest at eight percent. The International was consolidated with the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company on September 30, 1873 to form the International and Great Northern Railroad Company. Interestingly, this bond is dated well past the date of consolidation of the new railroad.
