Description

    The Copley Medal of the Royal Society, a silver specimen, 1731, by J S Tanner. Pallas seated holding wreath, around her feet objects of the arts and sciences, G. COPLEY BART DIGNISSIMO., rev the arms of the Royal Society, ornately garnished and supported, 43mm (MI 522/81), extremely fine and very rare in silver. Cased in a later box. The medal which was first awarded in 1731, is the premier award of the Society, and was established by Sir Godfrey Copley who endowed it with the sum of £100. In 1776 Captain James Cook was awarded the medal for his account of the method he had taken to preserve the health of the crew on board H.M.S. Resolution, during her voyage round the world.
