Commander's flight suit patches worn on the third Space Shuttle mission.

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-3) Flown Flight Suit Patches (Four) Worn by Mission Commander Jack Lousma, Originally from his Personal Collection, Signed and Certified. Offered here is a stunning 22" x 25" framed display containing all four of Lousma's suit patches from this important early shuttle mission, March 22-30, 1982. During their time in orbit, Commander Lousma and Pilot Gordon Fullerton exposed the shuttle to extreme thermal stress, tested the Canadarm Remote Manipulator System, a fifty foot long robot arm, and conducted numerous scientific experiments. Poor weather at Edwards Air Force Base in California forced Lousma to land the shuttle at White Sands, New Mexico, the first and only landing there. A large sheet of parchment-type paper has the following text in attractive hand-accomplished calligraphy: "Space Shuttle/ Astronaut Insignias/ presented to/ Jack Lousma/ by/ Crew Systems Division/ Crew Emblem, NASA Logo and United States Flag/ from STS-3 Commander's Flight Suit/ Flown On Third Shuttle Flight". Mounted to the sheet are the four patches as removed after the flight: a U.S. Flag, 6.25" x 4.25"; an embroidered NASA "worm" logo, 4" x 2"; his black leather name patch "J. LOUSMA," 4" x 1.125"; and an embroidered mission insignia patch, 4" in diameter. The dramatic mission insignia depicts the shuttle flying out of a star with the robot arm holding the Plasma Diagnostics Package from the open payload bay. Lousma has written just beneath his name patch: "These patches were worn on/ my STS-3 flight suit/ Jack Lousma". Double matted and framed. A very desirable display piece from the early days of America's Space Shuttle program. The flag has some very light bleedthrough from the mounting glue, otherwise excellent condition.
