Description

One of just 111 flown on the first Space Shuttle mission.

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Tom Stafford, Serial Number 98F, with Signed LOA. This 39mm sterling silver medal is in its original plastic box with the "98 Silver" sticker on the bottom. This is one of only 111 flown aboard Columbia, on the first orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle, April 12-14, 1981, with crewmembers John Young and Robert Crippen. There were a total of 359 minted for this flight. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the shuttle, and its orbit around the Earth with the ship's name and the surnames of the crew. The reverse includes the names of the crewmembers and the engraved dates. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. The recent end of the U.S. Space Shuttle program should increase collector interest for early and rare STS material such as this. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Thomas P. Stafford" on his business letterhead, stating (in part): "Enclosed with this letter is a Robbins sterling silver medallion issued for and carried on the very first Space Shuttle mission. NASA designated the flight as Space Transportation System (STS) 1. The launch and landing dates are engraved on the reverse side. Serial number '98F' is engraved on the rim. The letter "F" stands for flown and is the indicator for which medallions were carried on the flight. I received this medallion from my good friend John Young who commanded STS-1. The flight was John's fifth voyage into space after flying two Gemini and two Apollo lunar missions. He walked on the moon during Apollo 16. STS-1 was Robert Crippen's first space flight. This mission proved that a complex space vehicle could safely return to earth and be reused for future space flights."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
