Description

Space Shuttle Atlantis Flown IBM-Manufactured General Purpose Computer. Another extremely heavy (fifty pounds or more) and large (10.5" x 7.5" x 22") first generation AP-101 computer CPU designed and made for the Space Shuttle program. This unit combined with its matching Input/ Output Processor (previous lot) basically makes up a miniature IBM 360 system. Records show that this particular production unit, Part # MC615-0001-0210 & Serial # 37, actually flew four times, all on Atlantis: STS-51-J (the first flight of Atlantis), STS-30, STS-34, and STS-36. This CPU was last powered up in 1995 at which time it tested fine. No guarantee of functionality today. This cost $1.3 million when originally manufactured. Very fine condition.

In 1995, NASA and the Johnson Space Center decided to become ISO 9000-compliant. One condition states that "If a physical item does not have a purpose, it must go." These older AP101 computers were judged to be outdated and they were excessed with approximately one third donated to schools and museums. Another third were sold for scrap (we cannot confirm this but apparently there is a certain amount of gold contained in these). The rest were auctioned off and that is the source for this pair (see previous lot).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
