Virgil "Gus" "Greasy" Grissom's High School Yearbook. (Mitchell, Indiana: Mitchell High School, 1944), blue embossed leatherette boards, 4to (8" x 10.75"). Illustrated endpapers. Published by the senior class of Mitchell High School, of which Virgil "Gus" Grissom was a member. Grissom's senior picture is on page eight. He is identified as "Virgil Grissom 'Greasy'". Beneath his name are the words "Example of how a Senior can become attached to a Junior girl" and his organizational affiliations: "Hi-Y, Signal, Camera". Further reading in the yearbook reveals that Grissom was the student manager for the basketball team, as well as a delegate to the Hi-Y club's Older Boys' Conference at Indianapolis. Though not his personal copy of his high school yearbook, this is a fascinating memento of Grissom's high school career. He would go on to Purdue University, the United States Air Force, NASA, and space as an original member of the Mercury Seven. Tragically, Grissom's NASA career and life ended in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. The yearbook presented here is in very good condition, though the spine is a touch shaken. An early and rare yearbook of an American astronaut before embarking on the career that made him a legend.
