    Description

Space Shuttle Atlantis, Columbia, and Discovery Flown IBM-Manufactured Computer Input/ Output Processing Unit. At fifty or more pounds and 10.5" x 7.5" x 22" in size, this is a reminder at how far we've come in computer technology in the last thirty years. This is part of the early AP-101 Space Shuttle computer, the IOP for the CPU offered below. Records show that this particular production unit, Part # MC615-0001-0314 & Serial # 37, actually flew four times: STS-51-J (first flight of Atlantis), STS-26 (Discovery), STS-28 (Columbia), and STS-35 (Columbia). Records also show that this IOP had a hard failure after its last flight; no tests were run to determine the cause. This cost $850,000 when originally manufactured. Very fine condition.

In 1995, NASA and the Johnson Space Center decided to become ISO 9000-compliant. One condition states that "If a physical item does not have a purpose, it must go." These older AP101 computers were judged to be outdated and they were excessed with approximately one third donated to schools and museums. Another third were sold for scrap (we cannot confirm this but apparently there is a certain amount of gold contained in these). The rest were auctioned off and that is the source for this pair (see following lot).
