Landed on the moon and returned to Earth.

Luna 24 Return Sample flown to the moon and back and given to Oleg Ivanovsky. This is the last return piece of a spacecraft from the moon in the twentieth century. The Soviets had three lunar sample return missions; this sample is part of the outer honeycombed ablation covering that shows the design of the covering and, on the other side, the scorching of the "fires of re-entry."

Oleg Ivanovsky was given this rare significant sample for heading the lunar program that included, Luna 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 20, 24, Lunokhod 1 and 2, Sputnik 1 and 2, Vostok 1, and others. This piece went from the earth on August 9, 1976, to the moon and back. The probe landed in the area known as Mare Crisium (Sea of Crisis). The mission successfully returned 170 grams of lunar samples to the earth on August 22, 1976. Luna 24 was the last lunar spacecraft to be launched by the Soviet Union, and as of 2011, it is also the final spacecraft from any country to have made a soft landing on the moon. Size is 4.75" diameter x 1" thick. Condition is fine. A signed letter of authenticity from Ivanovsky is included.
