Luna 1 Titanium Emblem, 0.875" x 0.875", identical to the one carried to interstellar space on the first rocket launched outside earth's orbit into space. This is the souvenir pendant created by Oleg Ivanovsky, the head of the Luna Program. Ivanovsky designed the original pendant in early 1958 and placed it in an explosive ball for impact on the moon. This titanium pentagon contains the emblem of the U.S.S.R. on one side and the date, January 1959, on the other. The original was made in the Moscow Mint for the small ball that was included in the Luna 1 rocket, which was the first rocket launched into interplanetary space. Its complements are now orbiting the sun as the first launch of Luna 1 flew by the moon and entered into and remains in orbit around the sun. This artifact of the earliest rocket flight is extremely rare since there are few if any other of these remnants of the Luna 1 since it was deemed unsuccessful at the time and few were given out. A certificate of authenticity signed by Oleg Ivanovsky is included. Excellent condition.
