    Description

Ed White II: United Nations Plate and Photo with Note from His Father, from His Personal Collection. A 1965-dated U.N. plate of 10.75" diameter, 22K gold on white china, celebrating the International Co-operation Year and the organization's Twentieth Anniversary. This was given to White when he visited the U.N. on October 7, 1965, to present a Gemini 4-flown U.N. flag to the Secretary General. The 10" x 8" B&W photo of this ceremony pictures Jim McDivitt and Ed White with his wife and children, as well as U Thant and other dignitaries. On the back of the photo, underneath the printed caption, is a handwritten notation regarding the history of this flag, signed: "Edward H. White/ Major General, U.S.A.F. (Ret)" (White's father). It reads (in full): "I presented this flag to Ed II prior to the G.T.-4 flight and suggested he carry it with him. It was presented to me in Japan after the outbreak of the Korean War by my Non-Commissioned Officers Club of the 1503 Air Transport Wing stationed at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Japan." Also included with this lot is a photocopy of a letter, dated August 20, 1965, from U.S. Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg inviting White up to present the flag. All in excellent condition.
