Apollo 17 Flown American Flag on Original Presentation Certificate with Letter of Transmittal. A 5.5" x 4.25" U.S. flag mounted to an attractive certificate and framed to an overall 12" x 15". The certificate, from NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center, bears the Apollo Program logo and Apollo 17 mission insignias at the bottom and is personalized to "Richard C. Proffitt". It reads: "Presented in Appreciation of your role in the success of the Apollo Program. This flag was carried around the moon by the Apollo 17 Astronauts December 10-14, 1972." It is signed by "Kurt H. Debus", the first Director of the Kennedy Space Center. Excellent condition.

Also included in this lot are two related typed letters signed, on NASA letterheads, addressed to Proffitt. The first is dated April 24, 1975, and is signed by NASA's Director of Launch Operations "W. J. Kapryan". It invites Proffitt to the Flag Presentation ceremony on May 1st. The second, dated May 1, 1975, is signed by KSC's second director "Lee Scherer". It reads, in part: "A limited number of souvenir flags were carried around the Moon by the Apollo 17 astronauts. I have been given the privilege of distributing these flags to those individuals whose efforts contributed significantly to the overwhelming success of the Apollo Program..." Both letters excellent save for paper clip indentations at top. From the estate of NASA engineer Richard C. Proffitt, Launch Complex 39 Operations Manager from 1969 to 1976.
